One-on-One
It’s one thing to “learn” about governance and another challenge to “implement” governance practices into an organization. And, it’s natural that there be a myriad of ongoing challenges that surface as you navigate change. A Governance Coach is an invaluable resource you can utilize to support you in that process. Our coaching encompasses both the smart side of organizational development as well as the healthy relationship side. The GEM coaching package provides you with a STRIVE! coach who will have regular contact with the CEO or Chair or both for one-on-one coaching over the phone once a month and as needed by email in between. The sessions are focused on the goals you determine and provides you with the expert governance resources to assist in board meeting development, board:CEO relationships and any other pressing governance concern at the time.

CEO - The role of the CEO is often a lonely position. He/she is the conduit between the Board and the staff. Coaching gives another perspective and support in times of greater stress and change. Too often, CEOs find that relating with their board is a distraction from organizational success rather than a core contributor to it. We help the CEO clarify the part he or she will play in organizational governance. The coaching relationship could involve preliminary review of reports, role playing of awkward board conversations, or coaching on particular skills required. Whatever the form, our coach will work creatively with the CEO to maximize value to the governance and leadership function.

Board Chair - There is nothing more singularly powerful in raising a board’s performance than raising the Chair’s performance. Your Board Chair will work with us to create a development plan and then talk with our Coach each month, both to ensure progress on the plan and to address board-specific issues. This could include reviewing agendas, managing a difficult board member, clarifying committee mandates and reports, relating with the CEO, and much more.
